Religion and State: Fundamentalism or Freedom?

by Bibbiablog Team

Promotional video for the New Israel Fund’s first international town hall webcast to be broadcast live on May 18, 2008 at 1:00 EST. To sign-up please go to www.nif.org/webcast

In Israel, there is no legal separation between religion and state. The Orthodox Jewish, Christian, Druze and Muslim courts have sole jurisdiction over life-cycle events such as marriage and divorce, with no legally recognized civil options. The coalition-based political system grants disproportionate power to minority religious parties and sacrifices personal religious freedom to political horse-trading. More and more Jewish Israelis are alienated from their own religion as a result of its association with the state-sanctioned ultra-Orthodox authorities. Moreover, in a neighborhood where religious fundamentalism often goes hand-in-hand with ultra-nationalism, the growing extremism and separatism of Jewish and Muslim religious leaders threaten Israeli democracy and freedom – and the long-term prospects for peace.

As Israel turns 60, the New Israel Fund is providing a very special opportunity to join a provocative discussion of the grave threats to religious and political freedom in Israel — and on the choices Israel must make to guarantee its future as a successful democracy.

60 anni di Israele “Hatikvah”

by Bibbiablog Team

l’Anima Ebraica anela
e verso l’oriente lontano,
un occhio guarda a Sion,
non è ancora persa
la nostra speranza,
la speranza due volte millenaria,
di essere un popolo libero
nella nostra terra,
la terra di Sion e Gerusalemme.
Hatikvah
Kol od balevav p’nimah
Nefesh Yehudi homiyah
Ulfa’atey mizrach kadimah
Ayin l’tzion tzofiyah
Od lo avdah tikvatenu
Hatikvah bat shnot alpayim
L’hiyot am chofshi b’artzenu
Eretz Tzion v’Yerushalayim
