Psalm research has become a fascinating point of growth in Old Testament scholarship and the results have been largely positive, particularly valuable for those seeking a theological understanding of the Psalter. However, the growth rate has made the field somewhat difficult to navigate. This commentary gathers the research and creates an accessible guide.
Geoffrey Grogan begins by expounding and evaluating the main scholarly approaches to Psalms. He includes issues raised by the superscriptions — treating them with seriousness — with special attention given to the Davidic references. He then provides an exegesis of each psalm, in which the emphasis is on their distinctive messages, though classification is not ignored.
Grogan follows with a full survey of the Psalter’s theological themes, highlighting the theological implications of its fivefold arrangement. He continues with a consideration of the massive contribution the Psalter makes to biblical theology, including the way the psalms were used and interpreted by Jesus and the New Testament writers.
Closing with an analysis of the contemporary relevance of the Psalms, Grogan’s work shows the considerable value the Psalter has to guide and challenge us as we face the problems of the church and the world today.

The essays in this volume focus on the interpretation of the Book of Psalms and comparable texts in the Hebrew Bible. A variety of methods is applied to the ancient texts. Some essays concentrate on composition and structure, others on redaction and context. It is of great interest to see that each approach has its strength and its limits: stressing the importance to read the Psalms with a multi-dimensional matrix of methods. By viewing the Psalms as prayers, and thus as expressions of both faith and despair, a perspective on the contents of the ancient hymns and their functions in daily life has been opened. This volume contains various incentives for future research.

CARBAJOSA Igancio,
This research investigates the character of the Peshitta in Psalms 90-150 in order to facilitate the proper use of this version in textual criticism. It identifies the Peshitta’s translation techniques (such as harmonization and assimilation) and it discusses the version’s interpretation of difficult passages in the Hebrew text. The question of the Hebrew Vorlage behind the Peshitta Psalter is also raised. A distinction is drawn between those Peshitta readings that reflect a Hebrew text different from that preserved in the MT and those that emerged during the Peshitta’s transmission. Also investigated here is the relationship between the Peshitta Psalms and the LXX and Targum, and an assessment of the supposed influence of these versions on the Peshitta Psalter is offered. Inquiry is made into the theology of the translation, the identity of the translators, and the relationships among the manuscripts of the Peshitta Psalter. This text is designed as a tool for scholars who, when confronted by critical questions in the Psalter, seek to understand the readings preserved in the Peshitta.
