This Encyclopedia will bring together the vast array of historical research into the reality of the man, the teachings, the acts, and the events ascribed to him that have served as the foundational story of one of the world’s central religions. This kind of historiography is not biography. The historical study of the Jesus stories and the transmission of these stories through time have been of seminal importance to historians of religion. Critical historical examination has provided a way for scholars of Christianity for centuries to analyze the roots of legend and religion in a way that allows scholars an escape from the confines of dogma, belief, and theological interpretation. In recent years, historical Jesus studies have opened up important discussions concerning anti-Semitism and early Christianity and the political and ideological filtering of the Jesus story of early Christianity through the Roman empire and beyond.

Entries will cover the classical studies that initiated the new historiography, the theoretical discussions about authenticating the historical record, the examination of sources that have led to the western understanding of Jesus’ teachings and disseminated myth of the events concerning Jesus’ birth and death.

Albert Eichhorn (1856–1926) was one of the founders of the history of religions approach during his years at the University of Göttingen.

Segnalo anche la traduzione inglese del libro Theissen G.– Winter D., The Quest for the Palusible Jesus. The Question of Criteria, Luisville-London, Westminster John Knox Press, 2002 (or.ted.: Die Crititerienfrage in der Jesusforschung, Freiburg Switzerland, University Press) che oltre ad una dettagliata storia dei criteri di dissimiglianza e coerenza, nel capitolo finale rappresenta quattro diverse tendenze teologiche (pp.257-259) che cercano di coordinare dati storici e prospettive di fede, si tratta di quattro orientamenti che non ho visto molto citati recentemente in Italia.

Un rabbino parla con Gesù “Questa disputa.. del grande erudito ebreo Jacob Neusner… mi ha aperto gli occhi sulla grandezza della parola di Gesù” (Benedetto XVI, Gesù di Nazareth )

Immaginatevi trasportati indietro di duemila anni in Galilea, nel momento in cui Gesù pronunciava il Discorso della montagna. Dopo averlo ascoltato, avreste abbandonato la vostra fede e la vostra tradizione per seguirlo, oppure avreste mantenuto la vostra fede e ve ne saresti andati via?

In questo libro Jacob Neusner considera la possibilità di un simile viaggio spirituale.

Inserendosi all’interno del contesto del Vangelo di Matteo, l’autore immagina di dialogare con Gesù di Nazareth attribuendogli il più alto gesto di rispetto per un ebreo, cioè la disputazione, mediante un onesto dibattito, sulla natura dell’unica verità di Dio. Neusner spiega come mai il Discorso della montagna non lo avrebbe convinto a seguire Gesù e come mai egli avrebbe continuato a seguire la Torah di Mosè. Esplora le ragioni in base alle quali i cristiani credono in Gesù Cristo e nel Regno dei cieli, mentre gli ebrei continuano a credere nella Torah di Mosè e nel regno della santità degli uomini qui sulla terra.
